What We Do

PAIRS, a project of South Carolina's Daily Newspapers, is administered by the South Carolina Education Oversight Committee (EOC).

PAIRS emerged as a result of "Conversations with the EOC" in every county of South Carolina, held from September 2003-April 2004. These meetings identified a critical need for all citizens to actively reinforce and support the mission of schools, particularly in the area of reading. "Conversations" revealed three strong areas of consensus:

The success of students depends upon activities that reinforce and extend learning acquired in school.

SC has a significant resource in people and groups who want to be involved, but are not certain how to get started or may not be connected to other efforts.

There is a synergistic impact when these individuals and groups work together.

PAIRS is a cooperative, public/private association of non-profit programs, organizations and individuals committed to the belief that reading is essential for success in school and that young people learn best when nurturing, caring adults provide motivation and support.

The PAIRS synergistic network is committed to sharing insight, resources and materials to improve student performance in reading as a key to individual success and the future of South Carolina.
